Bella and a rat
May. 26th, 2010 09:11 pmSo, Bella bought in another rodent tonight. Now, Matt has been insisting they are large mice but this one is most certainly a rat.
She came through the cat door and immediately dropped it on the computer room floor. Vespa was fascinated and had a good bat and a sniff.
Then I picked it up to put it on the kitchen floor (easier cleanup than an carpet). Bella then started showing that other side of herself that rarely comes out and gave me a stark reminder of what these cute kitties are descended from. She got all growly and and hissy and Vespa and started batting at the rat, then she grabbed it and continued to growl and hiss around the rat whenever Vespa showed any interest. Eventually Vespa got very good at just sitting back and watching and making like she was ignoring Bella.
Bella then took it into the loungeroom *sigh carpet* and continued to bat at the rat and hiss and growl at Vespa, who by now was mostly keeping a pretty safe distance. The odd thing was she'd let me pat her no problems. I didn't want to pick the damn thing up again because I had started preparing food by then so I just left her to it until I heard a familiar crunch. I came in to a headless rat. So I did pick it up this time and put it in her bowl and washed my hands. She removed it from the bowl again and proceeded to eat it on the floor, then drag it to the other end of the kitchen to finish (I put Vespa in her room at this time because I just wanted Bella to eat the rat on the lino and get it over with).
I found part of the head on another part of the floor. I recognised an eye, some molars and the distinctive rodent incisors. Bella ate half of it, managed to get the guts out and now it smells a bit, so I moved it back into her bowl. She then took it out of the bowl again and abandoned it. I guess she's full, it's a big rat. I'll give her until I go to bed and if it's not eaten it's getting thrown.
Bella is such a wuss in most other situation, but when she's got a kill she won't let any other cat take it away. Lil copped a growly ear-bashing when she caught that wattlebird and Vespa had no chance to getting near the rat tonight. Thankfully the last few times she's caught stuff it's been rats/mice and not native birds.

She can nab all the rats and mice she wants though. I tell her she can have any Rainbow Lorikeets she catches too.
