Mmm Fanfic.
There are tens of thousands of fanfics online that are complete crap. Bad writing, bad spelling and grammar, awful concepts.
But there are also absolute pearls among them.
I was writing fanfics about 15 years before I even knew that there was a term for it. Fanfic allows you to further explore a world. What would happen if the character was in this situation? What would happen if you put an original character in that world (answer : 90% of the time you'll get a Mary Sue, but I digress).
There are also sinful pleasures, fluffy things, slashfic (honestly, my favourite slash fics have actually had pretty in depth stories behind them, which is why I like them so much, I'm not a fan of PWP).
The two fandoms I read fic of mainly are Batman/Gotham City and Terminator. Batman provides a zillion screwed up characters to play with and the Terminator universe provides endless possibilities, because with time travel, there essentially is no canon.
