Where are they now?
Sep. 28th, 2009 12:12 pmAfter some Googling around and marking spots on Google Earth I have the following to report.
Pioneer World
Located in Armadale.
There are still a few old styled buildings here and a school. The actual full park is no longer operational
Atlantis Sun City Marine Park
Located in Two Rocks
Photographed 27 September 2009
Operated from 1981 to 1990 when changes to regulations for holding marine mammals changed.
There are plans to develop the site (houses and shops), but keep King Neptune as a focal point.
Dizzy Lamb Park
Located in Carrabooda
I wonder how many kids were fooled by the name, I know I was (I wanna go to DisneyLand!!). This was a pretty crappy actually, and later specialised more in vintage vehicles. A fire went through the area a few years back and it's been closed since 1999.
Action Park
Located in Mirrabooka
An artificial hill covered in waterslides as well as some other rides. Has long since been built over during the expansion of Mirrabooka Square Shopping Centre.
Castledare
Located near Kent Street Weir
There is a retirement village here now, but the mini train still exists and runs sometimes.
Castle Fun Park
Located in Mandurah/Halls Head
Some of the minature village still remains although a fire went through a while back. I vaguely remember that this place had a pool shaped like Australia (Tasmania as the spa).
Wanneroo Lion Park
Located in Wanneroo
Googling any permuation of "Lion Park" brings up suburban parks maintained by Lions Club, which is annoying. It would seem this was maybe Bullens Lion Park - this Bullen family seemed to have a similar enterprise in Brisbane and Sydney. This would have closed in the late 80s/early 90s.
Anyone know the actual name or the location of this place?
It's A Small World
Located in West Perth
A house with various animatronic exhibits and a big talking frog out the front. Not sure when this closed.
Fremantle Crocodile Park
Located in Fremantle (where Little Creatures brewery now is)
This opened around 1992 and has been closed for a while now. Googling brings up lots of tourist sites still recommending a visit. Anyone know when it closed down? They had a very valuable albino croc here among others.
El Caballo Blanco
Located in Wooroloo
Spanish for "The White Horses", this used to be a theme park based around performing Andalusian and Lipazanner horses. There were also a couple of water slides, a toboggan and a chairlift back in the 80s.
During the 90s and early 2000s it was just a resort, but has now gone back to having shows of performing horses. No more rides though.
Entertainment Centre
Located in Perth City
Gotta get some photos before they knock it down. This was closed in 2002 but in it's heyday was the premiere venue for concerts and various other shows. I went there often and saw -
- multiple Fat Cat's Birthdays
- a Mr Men show
- multiple games of basketball (it was the home venue of the Perth Wildcats)
- the Moscow Circus
- Les Miserables
- Phantom of the Opera
- Pearl Jam
- silverchair
- two Rock Eisteddfods - one I was part of the backstage crew for my school.
Cable Water Ski Park
Located in Spearwood
Googling still brings up plenty of sites with info on the location and facilities at this place, despite the fact that it closed down a few years ago now. Looking at the map image (not satellite) on Google Maps shows the outlines of the old pools, which are now filled in and covered with a new housing development.
Ascot Water Playground
Located in Ascot/Belmont
Closed for quite a few years now, but still remains because it's too expensive to demolish. The great expanses of concrete and shallow pools here were finally deemed a safety hazard, as well as an environmental one (chlorinated pools, awfully close to the river).
Mirrabooka Ice Rink
Located in Mirrabooka
When did this close? I went there a few times in the late 90s.
Kalamunda Roller Rink
Located in Kalamunda (behind Wet 'n' Wild water park).
A regular hang-out for me and my friends in our high school days. Don't know when it closed.
Can anyone provide any more info on these? Or can you think of some others?

Date: 2009-09-29 12:41 pm (UTC)I also went to the roller rink place in hilton a few times. it is quite crap.
there were a few things down mandurah way which was such a waste back then because no one went to mandurah unless they had a holiday home there.
there was also the old rail line that during the americas cup was converted to (a very over priced) tourist train that went from south beach, past the esplanade and around past the round house. we used it once, felt exceedingly ripped off and never again
you will find that many closed during the whole 'public liabilty' insurance issues of the late 90's early naughties. I seen to recall a few go-cart tracks vanishing around then

Date: 2009-09-28 12:55 pm (UTC)mirrabooka ice rink only closed down in the last 2-3 years i think. they now have one in malaga on marshall road, just up from the markets. it opened this winter.
i went to the last horse show in the old elcaballo in 1991 i think. maybe 1990. anyways a whole bunch of school kids from the area went to see the last show (or maybe during the last week of shows). i was at wundowie primary, so was 90 or 91. then it changed name from elcaballo blanco to just elcaballo and was the resort. and of course, the horse shows are back on now, as you know.

Date: 2009-09-29 12:34 pm (UTC)we used to go to cables all the time when it was free entry and you paid $7 to use the cable skis for an hour, then they started charging $1 entry and slowly this went up so we stopped going.

Cable Water Ski Park
I've done over half the termite treatments for the houses built on the site
