It's a road trip!
Aug. 18th, 2009 04:25 pmOkay, Matt is back so it's no longer a secret. I have a new car, and it's a 4WD.
This baby is taking me to Broome.
Now, I had a plan to drive to Broome and do some intense birding, possibly on my own. But after 2/3 years of thinking about this trip I've come to the conclusion that in all honesty - unless I'm on an organised trip with other Birds Aus'ers, I want to do a bit of birding sure, but I also want to have a holiday with friends, and do other holiday/travel things apart from birding.
I'm intending on taking the inland route up and the coastal route down, maybe staying a few days in places like Karijini, Coral Bay/Exmouth and Monkey Mia.
In Broome I'd like to spend a few days out at Broome Bird Observatory, watching the waders wing their way to Siberia (this would make the trip in April/May - not during Swancon, obviously, and I also don't really want to be there during the Wave The Waders Goodbye course because the BBO will be too hectic then, and the course goers will be getting all the attention). I want to do a lakes tour (the lakes didn't get any water when I worked up there) - BBO gets special permission to go onto Roebuck Plains station for this tour, so it's better going with them rather than in your own car.
I then want to spend a few nights in Broome proper, staying somewhere nicer. Matt has made mention of the possibility of cheap Accord accomodation, but that may or may not happen. A day trip to Derby may even be on the plans.
So there will birdwatching and bushwalking, as well as lazing on beaches and looking at tourist traps and going to restaurants and local fast food joints.
Anyone interested in joining me? My car can only carry two comfortably with luggage (hopefully the other person will be Matt). But convoys are always fun - and a little safer when trekking around this great southern land.
