I got a letter requesting I do jury duty!! The first time it's happened to me.

How do I find out if I'm inelligible? I work as a secretary for a law firm - would that disqualify me? The duty starts a few days before I intend to be going up north a bit.

These are the two relevant documents:

http://www.courts.dotag.wa.gov.au/F/faq_for_employers.aspx

There's a legal practitioner exemption but I don't think you would qualify. If your boss is willing to write a letter stating that your absence will cause "Undue Hardship" you can be excused. There's bunch of other options too, have a look at the pages. Though according to the Justice Department an average jury duty stint is less than a week so you may end up fine anyway.

Interestingly in the ACT you'd be exempt as an employee of a practicing lawyer.

you send them evidence of you preplanned holiday and they go "okay"

first (and only) time I got a letter I had tickets to Thailand.

About the only proof would be my name on a list at the Birds WA Office. It's a campout over the long weekend, and the camping is free.
