Well the times I've done it it was looking for animals at night. Either walking along or from the back of a ute. From the ute it was done for surveying purposes. Walking it's mainly for fun. You have to be careful though (and many recreational spotlighters are not), because shining a bright light directly on a nocturnal animal is rather bad for it. Red cellophane over the spotlight doesn't disturb animals so much.
