Does anyone know - do citrus fruits ripen off the tree?

One of my lemons fell off the tree and it's still a tad green.

I'm not sure whether it will work, but you could try putting it in a paper bag with a banana. The gas that bananas give off generally ripen other fruits, but I am not sure about lemons.

It's worth a go...

I read your comment and was skeptical but after a little digging I was convinced.

Bananas give off Ethylene (C2H4) which is a plant hormone that accelerates fruit ripening and flower decay. I found no mention of Ethylene effecting lemons (though it definitely effects tomatoes and apples) but it's worth a shot.
