First - Cigarette smoke - By a mile. Unlike most scents that just assault your senses briefly then disappear, smoke hangs around, permeates and clings. And the fact that you can smell it means your body is also taking in the various poisons contained in the smoke, causing sore throats, breathing issues, sneezing, dermatitis and a bunch of other things for anyone near the smoke. It's more than just a smell and it's foul. Last night a girl at karaoke was talking to me, she was probably nice enough, but I couldn't get over her terrible cigarette breath.

Second - Is the inspiration for this post. Cut marrow bones. I've recently had the pleasure of experience this smell whenever someone orders dog bones. It's one of very few smells that almost makes me dry retch. I like sucking the marrow out of chops and roasts, but the combination of raw marrow, blood, bone and synovial fluid on a cows femur is just utterly disgusting. No wonder dogs like them.

And a few others.

Dead Things - Ah cadaverine and putrescine. Where would we be without you? I've had frogs rotting in my bedroom air-conditioner and a deceased goshawk around the side of the office in Broome. What a lovely odour.

Dirty Clothes - That have been left on the floor for a few weeks. *gag*

Nail Clinics - I don't know what the fuck chemicals they use at those places, but I almost pass out whenever I pass one at a shopping centre. I don't know how people sit inside them for extended periods of time.

Perming Fluid

Ammonia/Ether/any of those other chemicals that feels like you've been punched in the head when you get a whiff of them.

Old Cooked Broccolli - Actually, a lot of those green veggies get like this. It's the sulfur in 'em.

Morning Breath - I get it myself. Gross.

Ah man, I thought of a few other things earlier. Maybe I'll remember them later. Notice that shit (as in fecal matter), is not on this list. Sure, it's not pleasant, but I'd rather sniff shit than the things listed above. And preferably herbivore poo. Carnivore poo can get pretty nasty.

Rendering plant smells like death. It's also a thick, greasy smell that hangs in the air. We lived across the river/downwind of one a little over a year ago. It was truly awful...

I agree on the old cooked broccoli. Who would guess that something so yummy could end up smelling like fart?
