Poor Lil's been in the wars

About 4/5 days ago I noticed Lil's eye was a bit gooby and half closed. I wanted to take both my girls to the vet for a checkup before our move to Narrogin anyway, so I decided I'd take them in on Monday.
Bella is healthy as a horse, just a smidge tubby, I will have to resist her pitiful "I haven't been fed in a month" miaows.
Lil on the other hand. For starters she has skin cancer on her nose, which I had suspected (she finds any patch of sun she can and sits in it). Not much can be done about them. I did get some sunscreen for her which stays on her ears okay but she licks it straight off her nose. The vet told me I shouldn't really bother with it at all because she's just ingesting the stuff.
Her eye had a corneal ulcer. She's obviously been in a fight with some cat and copped a scratch. The way her cornea was torn up required an operation to scrape off the excess so it could heal neatly and quickly. The vet told me it would cost $200 for that, of course mainly because anaesthetic isn't cheap. Seeing as I'm about to move house and have borrowed $1000 off my mum to pay the bond, I initially hesitated and said I'd take her home and consider.
In retrospect I wonder how I even played the thought in my mind of NOT doing anything. To me it was pretty much a case of do I do something now, or do I wait until I move and start work to get it fixed. I couldn't leave her in pain and irritation. Lucky I have a habit of squirreling up to hundreds of dollars away in places apart from my bank account. My Paypal account had a tidy $700 in it, so I transferred it over to my bank account, rang the vet and booked her in for the next morning.
While she was under anaesthetic I decided to get her teeth cleaned because they're pretty bad and to get her evil claws from hell trimmed. The vet later told me he would have trimmed her claws anyway to prevent her having a go at the eye.
I picked her up tonight and discovered the answer to another of my concerns. For the last few weeks Lil hasn't liked being touched on the back/tail area. On the phone the vet initially told me he thought she was just a cranky cat, but lucky he checked it out properly (he didn't in the initial consultation because we were focusing on her eye).
She had a large abcess on her tail, I do recall there being a lump, but it never really dawned on me that it was an abcess for some reason. The vet lanced that and tidied it up. I imagine some people would get annoyed if the vet carried out and charged for an extra procedure without consulting them, but if he had rung me I'd have told him to go ahead anyway, it was an extra $20, mainly for the anti-biotics.
So now she's staying inside, which will annoy Bella because she actually uses the gardens for a toilet, Lil always uses the litter tray. I have to give her anti-biotics for the next few days too which will be a barrel of laughs. But hopefully in the end she'll feel a lot better for it, and be less of a crankypants.
And as a bonus, a gratitious photo of Bella being too cute for her own good.

Date: 2006-09-21 01:06 am (UTC)Phantom, one of my other cats that lives with my parents had an abcess on her belly (what is it with these neutered female cats getting into fights?) We got it fixed up and afterwards the vet told us her teeth were horrible and needed a clean. Then we found to get it done would require her to be put under and we were all, "Well why didn't you tell us about the teeth BEFORE you put her under the first time so we could get it all done at once?"
She still hasn't had her teeth cleaned (and she had the op years ago) because she's never had to have another operation. We just feed her dry food now, she's managing fine.

Date: 2006-09-21 01:35 am (UTC)My kitty only eats dry food so hopefully she won't have teeth problems until she's really old. She recovered well from her sterilisation op, and now I just have to deal with puppy.
Bella is indeed cute. I love tortis! :)
