I am currently living rent free in Geraldton as well as maintaining a house in Canberra. Obviously this means that my advice is not too useful to you but I felt like posting in case it helps (and I want to have a bit of a whinge).
My house in Canberra is a new 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in a developing suburb in the far north (it's about 1km in from the NSW border and 20km away from the CBD). The house is not very well appointed or of excellent construction but as I mentioned is both new and large. My lease specifies a $430 per week rent. To be fair though this is considered high for Canberra standards but not unreasonable (it is perhaps 5-10% above standard price)
According to quick research the same house in Geraldton would rent for between $175/wk and $250/wk ($175 for a reasonable suburb, $250 for the most expensive suburb in the region).
Rental prices like everything else are entirely supply and demand, the further you get from urban centers the lower demand is. You be able to find something large enough for yourself at an affordable price.
