Oct. 22nd, 2002 06:04 pmMum cleaned up the ponyroom *screams*
I had all this stuff organised and mum moved it all around *screams again*
Half the stuff I had on display is now shoved away in a cupboard *screams again*
bloody parents.
The dinosaur presentation is next Tuesday - shit. Better find nice pics of dinos and make up overheads. shit.
Loverly weather today - 31.2C max, 29.5 right now *basks*
wonder if I can make the time for a spa
Taking a vaginal smear from a rat is easier than it sounded, which is good, seeing I'm gonna hafta do it a few more times before this experiment is over. Haven't given one an injection yet but the people who have done also said it was surprisingly easy.

Date: 2002-10-22 08:25 am (UTC)Righto. This is for Comparative Animal Physiology, a third year unit.
The only other experience I have had in such invasive practises is taking the temperature of dogs and horses, and that wasn't at uni. That was at TAFE which was a completely unrelated course. I too am a bit iffy about us just being thrown into it.
We were shown how to do it beforehand, and if anyone is unsure a demonstrator is on hand. But it was ALOT easier than we all imagined it would be. And no rats have been harmed in past years either.
The experiment consists of control rats and ovarectomized rats. We are taking vaginal smears daily to monitor how the cells change during different stages of oestrus. The ovarectomized are injected with either plain oil, oestrogen or progesterone (depending on the day). We are looking to see if artifically introduced hormones can induce the cell changes in the uterus that a normal rat has.
Nothing new will be learned (it will be new for the class, but not for science). But we are being examined on our handling and husbandaryso I guess it's good practise.

hmmm, your course sounds pretty cool.
i spent the morning gram staining cultures, isolating colonies on typticase soy agar plates, preparing one of those chemical panel thingies on a broth and starting an antibiotic sensitivity assay.
but your stuff sounds heaps more fun - if i have to sterilise one more calibrated loop.. :P

In the year that I have had my livejournal, I don't think I have ever seen anyone cover such a bizzare range of subjects in so few posts :)
