Well, yesterday was Christmas. Not a half bad day.

Started off around 7am and I insisted we play the old Peppermint Candy Kids record, which required getting all the junk off the old record player and finding the record in the pile that was shoved behind the record player. Then of course the player wouldn't spin so dad took it apart and fixed it up. Eventually we had our old childhood carols. :)

We then had the usual ham and cheese crossiants for breakfast followed by pressie swapping. I got mum The Reef by Di Morrisey (which she'd asked for) and a pair of thongs for dad (which he needed). Mum has already taken me out and bought me loads of clothes for up north but I also got a nifty backpack with a normal pocket up the top and a zip off, insulated section on the bottom for things like lunch. Very useful. They're also gonna buy me a nice roo leather akubra for Broome as well.

We then headed to Shell and Ian's. Six White Boomers played on the radio on the way. Lachie of course had loads of presents (mostly trains and Bob the Builder). I got $20 and some insect repellant from them. *giggles* Yes, I WANTED insect repellent, it's one of those natural oils one without all the evil chemicals in it.

Then it was off to Uncle Laurie's and Aunty Cyndi's for lunch. It was great to see all my cousins again (especially Russell who has been in Canada for a year and a bit.) We've all grown up now, it's kinda depressing. We were all reminiscing on how Christmas was back when we were kids. One of the other girls there had recieved a white Fender Strat and amp. This was one of the guitars I drooled over back in the day. So I ogled it yesterday too and Russell played a few riffs. Bree confessed to me her mortal fear of whales and velour, which was awfully funny to me. I got some chocolates, a (non-winning) scratchie and a slik-pik for the New Year's superdraw. All the other guys got scratchies and the slik-pik too so of course we were all insisting ours will be the winning ticket. Russell won $10 on his scratchie then Rhianna won $11 on hers.

I was going to have a swim but the storm front came through, first just bringing in wind and black clouds that cooled stuff down a lot. Then we had thunder and lightning and a bit of summer rain, which I proceeded to run in. :) Apparently the max yesterday was 38 (that's 100 Fahrenheit for all you Imperial inclined people).

We went to Pinaroo Memorial Park after to put some roses on Pop's plaque. It's been 10 years since he died. Pinaroo is a lovely place. Nice to know he's accompanied by ducks and honeyeaters and whistlers and fantails...

And we saw kangaroos there, as well as others on the way home. It WAS roo o'clock.

After coming home and restocking we headed to Craig and Gill's for dinner. Luke has a rainbow lorikeet, I let him know it was evil. ;) Good to see Luke liked the present I got for him (a copy of Magician). And from those guys I got... a pair of binos!! *squee!* They're nice little light ones with better magnification than my old, huge, heavy pair.

We had pretty much leftovers for dinner then Matty demonstrated his new Eye Toy game (a camera is mounted on the T.V. and you actually physically interact with the game.) Then the boys were sent to bed and us big kids played some Singstar. That was fun. Gill and Craig serenaded us with I Got You Babe. Then I sang White Flag (and got a smashing score! I'd do even better if I was standing) and then did Careless Whisper before mum did Downtown. Then just for laughs Craig and I did Y.M.C.A.

I decided to come along for the traditional big Boxing Day breakfast with mum and dad. It was held at Peggy's, who is a friend of mum. I was quite surprised to discover that the wattlebirds around their house were western wattlebirds. I've never seen them in urban areas before!

Then we went and saw The Phantom Of The Opera with Tom & Sandy.

It was decent, but not as good as the stage musical. It was kinda like having all the best angles to watch the stage show in a way however.

- It would have been better done by Baz Lurhmann. The costumes and dancing just lacked without him. Masquerade was a real disappointment, I was really wanting a larger array of masks and costumes.
- Masquerade was sung too fast. Some other songs were too slow in bits. That's just me being picky.
- Raoul and Erik were both total eye candy.
- Apparently the girl who played Christine WAS singing it herself. It so looked like she wasn't opening her mouth enough to really be singing soprano opera.
- The flash forwards were a tad unneccessary I thought. I guess they stuck them where you would have just had magnesium flares in the live show.
- What's with the alternate story of Madame Giry rescuing Erik and secreting him in the opera house?
- Why is the Phantom's name never mentioned in the Lloyd Webber version?
- I'm sure they mucked around the sequence where the chandelier falls. But I can't remember exactly.
- It got a little tasteless and crude at times (like the guy mooning Carlotta), but other parts were awesome and sensual.
- All of the singing was decent. No-one will ever top Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman let's face it.
- Minnie Driver SO was not singing Carlotta.
- I might have to try and read Gaston Leroux's book again.
- I HATED how they just changed random lines of the song. Especially the one that goes "To a prosperous new year, to the new chandelier!", they also changed the "What a change, your really not a bitch"... err, "bit" line.
- Does every opera like movie have to have an obligatory midget or something? What was with that?
- Ahhh! Reading IMDB. Antonio Banderas was one of the ones originally slated for the role of Erik. When he first popped up I thought he looked very similar to Banderas.
- I'm sure back in the early 1900's the sign outside the opera house did not have the English translation that there was an auction there.

- Raise your hand if you go into a total swoon over Jareth from Labyrinth AND Erik. I now want two music boxes. One that plays As The World Falls Down and one that plays Masquerade.

No I didn't.

Yes, I still have it.
No, I haven't watched it all yet.
No, I haven't burned it yet (I need to get a burning program).

Can I just do a straight burn and they'll be fine to play on the computer and in a DVD player?

*adds that to her list of things to do before heading to Broome*

You should be able to do a direct cd copy using pretty much any cd burning program out there. If you do a proper cd copy, you won't have any problems playing it in a dvd player. I suggest you get decent CD-Rs though (you get what you pay for).

It would be a big time saver if you have 2 cd drives. You could put the blank cd in the burner, and the episode cd in the other cd drive, and then copy them that way.

Otherwise you'll need at least 500mb hdd space free, and it will take twice as long.

Are you able to do it? I have some disks.

I have nowhere near that space on my HD.

Hmmm. When do you go away? And how many episodes were there?

If I were to do it, you'd have to drop them off/pick them up... I'm never up that neck of the woods these days.

Aparently Minnie Driver was the only one that wasn't actually singing their roles.

Why is the Phantom's name never mentioned in the Lloyd Webber version?

it is...on stage..when Giry is telling raoul about the Phantom...guess they cut that out

- I'm sure they mucked around the sequence where the chandelier falls. But I can't remember exactly.

on stage it comes at the end of act 1, I read that they moved it to the end of the film for stageing reasons. as the director felt it would be more climatic then instead of in the middle of the movie *after the opera where chrsiten was playing the mute. instead of after the Phantom's opera

I now want two music boxes. One that plays As The World Falls Down and one that plays Masquerade.

with or without the hidoise monkey on top? if with...click here if with out...um..search the rest of the Sanfransicos music box company sight, they are bound to have one...both phantom themed and non Phantom themed

I can't help you wiht the As The World Falls Down one sorry

*swoons over the phantom*

i liked the minimalistic/mime-ness of masquerade, i thought it was clever.

everyone sung their own lines except for minnie driver

michael crawford and sarah brightman were originally going to do the movie until webber and brightman split up.

the extra scenes were written by webber, as well as a few extra songs

scathing review (but good/interesting read) here: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/24/movies/24phan.html?th

there is another novel called Phantom written by Susan Kay. They were giving probp to it in some parts of the movie. Like the gypsy camp and stuff. Good book

Yes Christine (Emma) sang it. She was 17 at the time of filming

Opera houses were filled with crude ppl. ~shrug~

They changed some of the songs to fit with how they were filming the movie. Which makes sense as otherwise ppl who haven't seen it live would be like huh?

I thought it was fabulous. Webber kept it true to his vision with only a few changes to make it work for a movie. And with it being on screen webber could do extra things and play around with it.
