Woah. I am getting really passionate about this whole cup thing.

It's mainly just about shifting people's attitudes. We've been brought up to be so ashamed of our natural cycles and to think that blood is "dirty" and "gross" that many of us fail to utilise products that are better for us, cost less money and are better for the environment.

It just makes me sad and frustrated that there are so many misinformed people out there.

I wish my toilet was closer to a sink though. Blood may not be dirty, but I can see it getting messy/tiresome. Tried for the first time today though!

ROFL!!

Yeah our toilet/bathroom are pretty close so I don't have much trouble.

Change it whenever you shower - MUCH easier.

::starts carrying her little cup flag, too::

People just do as they always do since they either don't know any better, or don't care... kind of like shopping at WalMart. ;)

I LOVE your icon. I want to put a giant David poster up in the room, but roomie is kind of...terrified of him.

Ignorant bitch. ^-^

I've been thinking about getting a keeper/cup for ages, but I don't know if I can actually use one. My cervix is at an odd angle (odd enough that OB/GYNs have commented on it several times). Do you think that they could tell me if I could use one, or do I just have to buy it and cross my... fingers?

And I must ask too... I've been wondering about this. Where can I buy a good one? I've seen a lot of ads for them, and such, but can anyone recommend a really GOOD one? I get terrible, miserable cramps from tampons, and pads just make me nutty.

I have a DivaCup and that's great and is made in Canada.

www.divacup.com

The Mooncup is similar to the DC (being silicone) and is made in the U.K.
www.mooncup.co.uk

The Keeper is made of rubber and in the U.S. Recently people have been having lots of trouble with their customer service, it also costs more.

Well they all have money back guarantees (so long as you don't chop the stem off - which I did almost immediately).

The Keeper I think is 3 months.
The Mooncup is 3 cycles.
and the DivaCup is a full year.

I finally bought one, and am awaiting it in the mail.

I think they're a great idea; I hope it works for me. Wish me luck XD

That's what I did last night, worked like a charm. Cuz it was my first time changing it, I was terrified.

pfft yeh, tell me about the whole ignorance thing. it seems to be only a problem here (where "here" generally means first world countries), where we have problems with being ashamed of period cycles coz blood is shameful and dirty and you shouldnt cuddle your newborn baby too much coz youll spoil it and teach it to be manipulative.

i mean...wtf?! o_O

is it bad (environmentally) for blood to go down the drain?

Considering the other crap we put down there I think blood is pretty safe. It's not toxic and it's biodegradable.

We just had a huge talk in my women's studies class on mestruation on Mon. and out of a close to forty person (only four of which are male) class, only four of us had ever heard of any of the alternative products (cups or cloth pads) and those four were, me, the intstructor, the presenter (Dr. Kissling who has a whole book about menstruation coming out this spring wheee!) and S. another student. How sad is that?

But on the plus side, lots of the women in there wanted to know where to get them and such on. Yay!

I guess it's all about "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death" (thank you Jello Biafra).
When I was a baby my mum used cloth nappies & did the whole sterilise them thing, now I've only ever seen people use disposable ones. Even after the babby has grown out of using nappies the cloth makes such a good polishing cloth, mum still has some of them!
Personally I'm the sort of person with a very weak stomach who has enough trouble being in her skin at certain times so the less I have to have to do with it all the better

Yeah.

I personally find the cup MORE convenient which just makes it all the better for me.

wot is this cup you speak of?

I dunno...a good many of the more ancient cultures I've read about don't let you out in public if you're menstruating. You have to stay in a special hut or designated area. I don't know if I'd want to do that.

That's sweet then :)
With those cup dealies, is there any chance of leakage because with the other methods there's ALWAYS some time when you're glad you have black clothes on?
I just don't dig blood - yours, animal, that guy over there, j's or mine. Then again I still gag cleaning the kitty gritty & sometimes when I open one of those "I wonder what's in there" containers that has been in the fridge for too long.

When it's in properly (sometime when I'm tired or lazy I don't check to see if it's popped open properly and sealed) it doesn't leak, unless it's been for ages and has gotten full.

And by ages I mean 12+ hours.
