This "human prey" show sucks
Sep. 5th, 2004 07:29 pmNo animal sees humans as prey. Humans are a threat often, and are duly attacked, or the animal mistakes them for something that IS food (ala the surfer looking like a seal). But animals don't go out of their way to eat humans.
Here's a lovely tale of a guy who goes out to hunt elk (apparently in the U.S. wilderness areas are places where you can go out and shoot things to feel macho). Bears are attracted to the remains of hunts. A mother bear and cub came across him. Of course the mother bear attacks.
First he runs - so of course the bear gives chase. Then he fights, proving to the bear that he IS a threat. Bear takes a few good chunks out of him then runs off. He grabs his gun and shoots charging bear. Leaving a cub orphaned (the show fails to mention this). If he had just dropped and stayed still the bear would probably have left him, but no.
Grrr.

Date: 2004-09-06 06:04 am (UTC)Erm...I've gone hunting every year with my dad since I was 5...up until I was about 13(I've never shot anything). I don't do it to feel macho.
But yes, there are places like that all over the US. It's seasonal and for the most part (at least with deer/moose/elk) it's only males you're allowed to shoot. You have to pay a fortune to shoot a female...and you get fined out the ass if you shoot something you don't have a permit for (even if it's an accident).

Date: 2004-09-07 08:28 pm (UTC)The antlers are usually kept as trophies. Sometimes the whole head is preserved and mounted (my uncle's basement is full of animal parts).
The meat is usually prepared and eaten or preserved to be eaten later.
The parts that "go to waste" are the bones, hooves, and organs.
One average size deer provides a rather substantial amount of meat.

However I can't help of thinking of that diflam ad with their deer head on the wall and the phrase "my legs, my legs, I can't feel my legs"
