Yesterday during the first lecture we were shown some slides of the varying plant life of Western Australia.  The lecturer warned us that he might get a little overexcited and everyone laughed.

But he's right, the beauty and variation are just stunning.  Such biodiversity evolved because it's had millions upon millions of years to evolve and has to adapt to such harsh conditions.  The range of adaptations is amazing.

And I found myself yearning.  Seeing pictures of the magnificent karri forests down south, and that endless spinefex plain up north.  I NEED to travel again.  I NEED to get back into nature.  I really NEED to travel north again, last time I was up there was 1996, it's been WAY too long.

I honestly feel complete and whole when I'm out there.  When I'm here in suburbia among people and technology I feel like there's a hole in me.  When I was crossing the Nullabor I felt whole.  I need to have a holiday in the wilderness again.

I know the feeling. Arizona is the same way ... the ponderosa pine stands, the ironwood forests. In the mountains behind my apartment complex, there are even isolated stands of elephant trees (Bursera) at their northernmost range limit (they are relatives of the frankincense tree).

This is my backyard.

My backyard is some uneven brick paving, a scraggly garden (there are some nice Bougenvillias growing however) then a brick wall. Over the brick wall is the freeway. *sigh*

Money money money!

I'd love to have a place near the beach up north a little.

However, north is no good in summer, cyclones and all.

hmm, you don't have to go as far north as the cyclones... how about the hot/dry coastal environments of Dongara, Geraldton etc...

i'm looking at toodyay or northam myself

I like the sounds of that. I want to drive across the desert.
