Not quite, I'm afraid. Not by word of mouth. Monks and priests could always read and write, even when they were the only people who could. But certainly, in the old days people copied things by hand, and there's plenty of room for things to get dropped out or misspelt or maybe one person would write a note in the margin and the next copyist would put that note into the text and then the next copyist would be none the wiser, stuff like that.
