Today I took a walk around Bold Park with the lovely people from Birds Western Australia. Bold Park is a huge chunk of bushland right next to Perry Lakes and it's managed by the same people that manage the famous Kings Park in the city.

I got three new birds to add to my list today. It would have been five if I'd seen every bird spotted on the trip.

Just as we were starting the walk a fan-tailed cuckoo was spotted sitting in a dead tree. First bird of the day and it was a newie! That was a good start. The place was infested with rainbow lorikeets so it was awkward to spot or hear other birds above them.

We ran into a couple of runners who were obviously avid birdwatchers themselves. They talked a little with the walk leaders and suddenly we were "being led on a detour - trust me it'll be worth it!" So we climbed a hill next to an old pine plantation and what was at the end??

New for the list. :)
And two tawny frogmouths well hidden on a pine tree trunk on the other side of the track. This is the second time I've been to the Perry Lakes/Bold Park area and both times I've seen tawnies!

Everyone agreed the detour was worth the effort. We were all very impressed.

A little further on one of the guys in the said he'd just seen a tawny crowned honeyeater. None of the leaders believed him at first because this is a kind of rare bird and most have them had never seen one before. They thought he possibly just saw a white-cheeked honeyeater. But then the bird appeared again and one of the leaders exclaimed that indeed it WAS a tawny-crowned honeyeater. I didn't see the details but I did see the bird. The last newie for the list today.

Later on the trip became a makeshift botanical expedition as we were told about the various banksias growing around the place. Also found two bobtail skinks near the path. There was a hollow near the path and inside half an eggshell was clearly visible. I had a look inside and was sure I could see something moving. I thought it may just be feathers being blown by the breeze but it seemed purposeful movement to me so I got out my torch that I always carry with me to have a look - unfortunately the batteries were dead but someone else had some of the right batteries on them so I borrowed them and took a look. I was right - 2 baby birds were in the hollow. Not sure of the species.

They just look like two fluffy grey lumps in the photo (behind the eggshell).

Overall 32 species were spotted. Not a bad day at all.
