I've come to the sad conclusion that about half the people who listen to music don't actually LISTEN to the music AT ALL.

Why do I say this? Because half the people at karaoke sing songs that they apparently love or that are just the classics that everyone knows AND THEY FUCK IT UP! I think to myself "Have you ever heard this song before in your life?" because they fuck it up so badly. I just don't get how it can happen. You supposedly love this song, but you can't even remember how it goes let alone the words.

I don't know how it is there but my experience is that most of the people who get up and do karaoke have had way too many to drink and thus of course just ruin the song. I have only gotten up to sing a handful of times myself which would only be after lots of beer was consumed. I sang Janis Joplin's "me and bobby mcgee" twice, Cyndi Lauper's "true colors", there's another one but I can't remember what it was, then there was Madonna's "like a virgin" that me and one of my friends put in this guy's name to go sing that I knew at the bar so my friend and I went up with him to sing the song, that was so funny :)

The point I'm trying to get to is that if they are like the people I know who do karaoke then they probably do know the song it's just that they can't do the song justice because they've had a few too many.

Actually, singing along with the radio and singing on your owm are two completely different things. Singing in a chorus is easy, since you have other voices to help you stay on track. In solo, it's all you and your own recall ability. So, people doing karaoke are like choral singers suddenly asked to do a solo. Even I, as a reasonably experienced soloist, still fuck up sometimes...

But some of these people sound like they have never heard the song before in their life.

maybe they hear the song differently to you. maybe they're tone deaf (there is another technical term for it which was more accurate but I've only ever read it once therefore can't recall it immediately). or maybe they only think they can sing well :)

and of course im not including the aforementioned too much to drink which reduces inhibitions and pretty much everything else.

I think for a lot of people, they love these classical songs, but don't hear them too often, and only really know the chorus properly.

I know that a lot of the songs that people sing there, i know the chorus pretty much off by heart but i wouldn't have a clue what most of the words are for the rest of the song.
