I think I left the bin lid open about a minute too long. There are fish heads in there among other things.

The anti-biotics did their job days ago, but of course I have to finish the course which is a couple more days. I can feel the bad effects of them now tho. A vague itch which headed me straight to the yoghurt and acidopholous pills, my stomach feels weird and the taste remains in my throat (yeah, these pills taste icky, a vaguely mouldy flavour). My mouth is also vaguely sore and my sweat stinks.

Gah, oh for normal body flora once again.

Working on lab report. First bit on Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was relatively easy. Next bit is on genetic drift, which I understand but it's really awkward to explain.

Your grandmother only had two loaf pans but she only had a recipe for 3 lbs of meat loaf, so everytime she made meat loaf, she made two 1.5 lb loaves...Later, your mother always made two loaves. She didn't know why, but that's how it was done... Later, you ask why and your grandmother explains, so you quit splitting the batch.

ok, bad analogy, lets try another:

Frog lives in swamp. frog's swamp gradually dries up, but he and his colony can't move. Offspring become less water dependent. Later, generations later, frogs can't cope with too much water.

ok, another one. The FLU!

Virus A attacks and kills 1/4 of world population. 3/4 of world population develop antibodies and pass along to their children the ability to make antibodies for Virus A. Virus A is forced to change slightly in order to reproduce and becomes Virus B. Virus B is not as strong as Virus A, but 100% of the world's population has no antibodies for it. Both organisms, the virus and the humans, adapted to develop something needed to survive. Genetic drift is the changes forced on an organism that allow a species to survive.

or, of course, you could go with cows and milk production and animal husbandry to develop desirable traits.

Oooh, genetic drift, we had soem great examples of that in year 12 =) *day-dreams about year 12 biology* Mmmm... I'm so picking up Genetics as an elective next year ;)

Actually, what you're talking about there is selection.

Drift is the random changes in genes that occur beside selection, which requires some force to alter the genes.

Antibiotics suck!
I just finished amoxiccillan *sp* and I have to take ceptra for a kidney infection! At leaste I got some pain pill!
Hope you get that nasty taste out of your mouth!
