Ningaloo is the largest fringing reef in Australia, and I think maybe even the southern hemisphere. (Great Barrier is a barrier reef, not fringing) It's a popular area for eco-friendly holidays and there is just a small town there, that's part of it's attraction.
Developers want to build a big resort on it. Right slap bang on a green turtle breeding ground (green turtles are endangered). All the extra people and boats are bound to have an impact on the reef, and it has been proven that dugongs (also endangered) and motor boats do NOT get along (the dugongs just die). Manta rays, the famous whale sharks (which you can swim with) and many other creatures are under threat due to the development. People in WA have been protesting for almost 2 years now. About every second car has a SAVE NINGALOO bumper sticker. It's clear that the West Australian public as a whole DOES NOT approve but the government are still looking like approving it!!

I wonder when Australia stopped being a democracy. And what happened to the precautionary principle - if there is a possibility that a development may damage an environment, you DON'T DO IT!! Western Australia doesn't need another bloody resort on a wilderness area. We need to set an example for the rest of the world that we DO care about our natural treasures.

This whole thing makes me fume. Again, nature (and in the end OUR resources) get destroyed for the almighty grubby dollar.
