This thing has been in the works since May last year. I bought the fabric and a hoodie pattern with the help of one friend, thinking, "Oh yeah, I can do this on my own!" (keep in mind that I have pretty much NO sewing experience and am artistic as a brick). I got out the pattern, unfolded it, looked at it and went, "Is that in English even?" It was shelved for a month or two then I asked another friend, who has done fashion design if she could make it for me. She said sure, then moved house. After many months of no progress I let her know I wanted it for 1 April. The date Swancon starts - Swancon is a Sci-fi/Fantasy convention that happens in Perth every year.

I picked it up on Wednesday night, the night before the con started. She had finished the hard part - the basic hoodie (which required an alteration to the pattern to make the bottom half opposite colours to the top half. It was up to me to add the diamonds and the liliripes AT the con. I had prepared the pom-poms in the previous weeks.

Luckily, Swancon is full of artsy people, sewing people and general costuming people. I cut my diamond shapes and got advice on the best stitches to use and busily stitched away at the red diamonds while sitting in on various panels. At one point I was joined by someone I hadn't previously met who offered to show me another kind of stitch. She then finished off the black arm diamonds for me. The arm diamonds were an afterthought, after positioning the three on the chest (and having a metric buttload of leftover fabric) I decided putting some on the arm wouldn't be too much more work.

I then cut out the shapes for the liliripes and got sucked into the (very long) auction where I managed to finish the basic stitching together. I also managed to spend $30 on a pile of old Terminator comics - Booyah!

Next morning was a costuming workshop (the Masquerade Ball was that night). Again mysterious new sewing friend (her name was Katherine) helped me out with the finishing off an attaching (well, we each finished a liliripe each then she made off to a panel with the whole lot again and finished sewing them on - what a legend!

If I can ever be bothered I may make a headband and wire arrangement to try and perk up the liliripes more, but I think that might be too much like hard work. :)

I put it on and became a cheesily grinning maniac.

Many people commented on how cute and awesome it was. Someone even asked where I'd got it - I made it! (With help).
Gosh, it still has me full of squee.

Credits - [livejournal.com profile] lotus79 for making the actual hoodie, Gilligan - for offering advice on attaching things, Katherine - for also offering advice on attaching things, then going ahead and doing said attaching. [livejournal.com profile] riverstar for helping me pick the fabric and pattern in the first place.
