It's essentially a competition to see how many bird species you can spot in the allocated time.
The armchair twitch is restricted to a small area - every bird you see from that area counts. The strategy here is finding a spot where lots of different birds will come in - like a lake near some good bushland.
The regular twitch involves going wherever you like and spotting as many species as possible before the time is up. The strategy here is more complicated, you have to pick a series of areas near each other to check out, and you also have to know when to stay and wait for birds and when to move on to a different spot. The 24 hour twitch of course involves a night, so you'd need to figure out some good spots for night birds too. I would love to do the 24 hour twitch in the Broome area, you could get WELL over 100 species without much effort (heck, I got 102 species by myself in about 8 hours).
