This morning Ricki told me, “We’re doing the BBQ for the Wetlands Taskforce tonight. You’re organising the food.” The Wetlands Taskforce is a group of representatives from each state (as well as someone from New Zealand) who pretty much advise the government on wetland conservation (and try their best to actually get the government to listen and take notice). They’re having their conference here – which is apt with Roebuck Bay’s credentials as a majorly significant and poorly protected wetland.

Anyway, so I was charged with finding out everyone food preferences (vegetarians, vegans, lactose intolerants, coeliac etc. et. al.) and booze preferences and purchasing the food. The other guys gave a little input and ideas, but I pretty much oversaw the lot.

Seeing as we were spending the government’s money (the taskforce is paying for it – oh crap, I must find the receipt for the fish!) I didn’t scrimp. From about 4:30 to 6:30 we were preparing and cooking food. I was most impressed with my salads, Ricki made her pechoras she’s been promising for ages (pechoras are like Indian cooking’s answer to tempura) and I put Stu on fish duty.

I made a few executive decisions. The best quality W.A. beer in (recyclable) cans that I was offered was Emu Bitter. I don’t drink beer, but most people around me do and even though I’m sure Joey will vehemently defend the ol’ E.B., I knew it wasn’t the most classy beer on the block (the local unsavouries around here drink copious quantities). So I decided to get Toohey’s New instead and it was a hit. I also decided against going the steak and chops avenue and figured “It’s not my money, and most of them are requesting it – I’m getting fish.” Action – where we do most of our shopping was useless for fish. I bought it from the Roebuck Seafood’s. The original choice was barramundi, but 1) it cost twice as much as anything else and 2) they didn’t have anyway, so I didn’t get it. The only fish he had enough of was Threadfin Salmon (still a lovely, local catch, fresh, never frozen). I believe he also gave me a little more fish than I should have got for the $50 I took from the till for the fish.

The night began with drinks and nibbles. Nibbles being that yummy cashew dip – basil and beetroot as well as a cheesy capsicum dip, with rice crackers. Salsa (mild and medium) with corn chips and fruit & nut mix.

Mains was fish with lemon, pepper and fennel cooked in foil on the BBQ. There were also sausages for those that way inclined. Potato and sweet potato wedges. Bean/avocado/spinach salad and just a basic salad platter to pick off of. Oh, and bread rolls. I got many compliments, it all went off with a bang.

We have shitloads of salad leftover and some sausages, but that’s cool, we’ll eat that.

And among my experience on my resume I can now put “catering”.

And we now have so much leftover food it’s kinda ridiculous. I guess we aren’t shopping for a while, which is cool with me.

What's better than Soundgarden or Led Zeppelin?

Soundgarden covering Led Zeppelin.

I'll write a long post re: this awesomeness later.

I also need someone who plays V:tM to help me out with a character sheet.

Anything... is like learning how to dance. You just have to learn the steps one by one, then put them all together.

I don't believe that anyone's cultural or religious idosynchrasies should get in the way of science.

The reason I'm so nice to people is because I know how horrible it is when things don't go your way. Unfortunately this means I get walked all over and things don't go my way instead. But if I do stand up and get things going my way, I feel guilty because other people aren't happy! Gah!
