A while ago I got hold of this years Entertainment voucher book.

So therefore Matt ([livejournal.com profile] firvulag - He writes the odd review too) and I have been eating out every weekend using 2 for 1 vouchers. We alternate who pays for the meal. In case you haven't noticed we fancy ourselves as amatuer food critics and we love eating out. These voucher books allow us to indulge in this pleasure a lot more often than we could otherwise - being poor students and all.

On the 20th of March we went to the Karralee Tavern. I ordered the Greek Lamb Salad and Matt ordered the Chicken Parmigana.

Greek Lamb Salad )

The salad was very nice. The meat was marinaded and tender. I tried an olive and reaffirmed the fact that I can only tolerate them in subs or on pizza. Matt ate my onion and the cucumber was just discarded. The rest however was good. Mmmm feta.

Chicken Parmigana )

The parmigana was huge but unfortunately the sauce tasted like the sauce on tinned spaghetti.

The 27th of March saw us popping up the road to the Tropea Ristorante. From the outside this place looks dodgy but inside it's all done up with a small outdoor area with a waterfall and a cosy indoor area with tables and booths. We were seated in a booth.

I ordered the Pesce Del Reggio - which was dory fillet in a mushroom cream sauce with shrimp.
Fishy fishy )

It was LOVELY! The sauce was divine. The fillet was HUGE and the bowl of veges we got to share was interesting. Matt ate most of the potato because he didn't like pumpkin. The potato was okay, seemed a little undercooked. The pumpkin must have been butternut and it was yummy! The peas and beans had some weird herbs or something on them and tastes a bit funny, we didn't eat all of those.

What did Matt order? He got the pepper steak.
Mooo )

As you can see, any less cooked and the damn thing would have been running around the plate. But it was VERY tender and Matt likes his meat anywhere from just passed over the flame for a second to charcoal.

Last week we headed down to Rockingham for one of Matt's bowling tournaments so we ate at Pengo's on Mersey Point. Which is where the ferrys to Penguin Island leave from.

Seeing as the voucher only allowed for meals under $18 it reduced the choices a little. I just got the stock-standard seafood basket, because I figured I was by the sea.
Seafood Basket )

It was certainly a decent serve. I didn't eat all the chips. There was fish, which was good. Prawn cutlets, which were okay. A seafood stick which was okay. Squid rings which were good, and two very unimpressive scallops.

Now Matt was the one who scored. He ordered chilli mussels. I tell ya if they had a non-chilli form of mussel I would also have got mussels. He was presented with a very large bowl full of mussels. Now for the fun part.

Can you guess how many mussels? )

Maybe seeing the shells piled up after he had finished might help.
The aftermath )

After I get a few guesses I'll let you know how many there were. Take note that this dish cost $16.50. Matt ate the whole bowl voraciously. Even I managed to score a couple that weren't too chillified and yep, they were good! He didn't eat the remaining soup because it was too tomatoey, I didn't eat it because it had too much chilli!
Soup )

Ah, and just for something different - a photo of the things I made yesterday with the salad and Turkish bread (recipe in previous entry). It was soooo yummy.
Cafe style Turkish bread sub thingys )

And yesterday, we went to dinner at Farrels in Victoria Park. This place was a little more pricey (dishes around the $25 - $30 mark instead of $15 - $25 that we're used to). There was a lot of emphasis on presentation. But the service was lightning quick! And they give you a bottle of water automatically, no trying to get a waiter's attention to get some water (we can't afford to buy drinks, so we just have water, we're concentrating on the food here!)

Anyway - I ordered the Duck Confit which was $27 but I figured I'd splurge. Two drumsticks and thighs served on a HUGE pile of potato mash with 4 figs and "sticky port jus".

QUACK! )

The meat was delicious. It reminds me of a cross between chicken and lamb. The texture and flavour really reminded me of roast lamb. The figs were also good but there was no way I could have eaten all that mash.

Matt got a prawn risotto with stuff like chilli, coconut and coriander in it.
Risotto )

Apparently some of the prawns were a little undercooked but overall it was good and somewhat unusual (the flavour was weird). They even gave him a (very spiffy looking green paper) doggie bag to take the leftovers home in. Less and less restaurants do that these days because morons forget to refrigerate the leftovers then sue the restaurants when they get food poisoning.

Hopefully from now on I can keep up with the weekly reviews. Hope I didn't make you too hungry. ;)

I have Lindt chocolate...

I think I might have some. :)

Kate and Ralph went to the restaurant and didn't tell us all about it! *shock*

Must interrogate next time I see them.
Maybe Tuesday - I mean, I DO have to go to uni to hand in my lab report - may as well torture Marsians while I'm there...
