We couldn't get the park right near the foreshore because the keeper of the park was unable to call us back before we wanted to leave. No biggie, we found a park not far from that on the verge of a park. Only 2 people were at the site when we arrived but we were served chocolate ice cream which was good. We were further back from the foreshore this time, further back than I've ever been (I'm used to being RIGHT on the water's edge so I see everything - in the last few years they have been putting more and more fireworks on the level of the river, so if you're not right there you miss half of the show). But also, being further back meant that when everyone near the river stood up to get a better view we weren't badly affected. The pyrotechnics in the sky and off the buildings were still perfectly visible and quite stunning. The rumbles and bangs echoed off the hill behind us, it was kinda eerie.
The all Australian soundtrack soundtrack was great, just a little amusing that everyone started to leave during the national anthem when of course it hadn't ended yet, much chaotic turning around to see the last of the show from them. I happened to be the only one in our group that actually brought a radio, so of course I got closest seat to it. One thing I learned from Skyshow is that you can't rely on others to bring radios, bring your own and you'll always be alright. I'm also glad the JJJ Hottest 100 was yesterday so I didn't have to battle radios blaring that all day. Sure I do listen to 94.5 anyway, but on Skyshow day I'd have listened to it anyway because all the info was on it and it was the station I wanted to be able to hear. There was some techno thumping nearby but it wasn't hugely overbearing.
I scored 6 at Bocce, my God, you'd think I was getting good at this game.
The stunt planes were bloody awesome. Been a few years since I've seen a full on stunt plane there complete with loops and stalls. The skydivers were rather speccy too.
Then there was "the incident". First I knew of it was 4 police cars roaring down the road on the hill sirens blaring and lights blazing. Next I heard someone had thrown a bottle at a cop. Next thing Matt tells me that they have the TRG (tactical response group) in. A crowd of people commences to surge about the park following the commotion, there will always be stupid people with mob mentality. For a while this actually seemed like a good thing because they moved out of our view of the river, but after a while they surged back, accompanied by police wielding batons and riot shields. They got uncomfortably close to our camp but in the end all was okay. Not long after that the crowd dispersed. I hope to find out more about what happened in the paper tomorrow. There always has to be some dickheads. The fireworks started not long after.
We then went back to Ray's to wait out the traffic chaos. Again I say, it's great knowing people that live on the foreshore. :)
So yeah, I had fun. More fun than last year. Pity more people didn't join us... or maybe that was one of the reasons why this year was better.
Oh yeah, and I hadn't heard Man Of Colours in ages!
