Well that was a rather adventurous night.

For entree I ate two witchety grubs - and got a certificate to say so. I was actually pretty disappointed. In the bush tucker shows you see long, fat grubs, the ones I got were tiny, 2 mouthfuls each. For $15 that was a bit steep, but at least it didn't fill me up before the second course.

I figured out how they taste and feel. You know that vein in a prawn that you usually pull out because it's a bit icky? (note - it's icky because it's actually not a vein at all - it's the prawn's digestive tract with all the goop it's been eating inside. Well witchety grubs have that kind of pasty texture. The taste is vaguely shellfishy, but only remotely. Maybe slightly nutty but not like peanuts - which most people describe it as apparently. They were edible, but nothing I'd consider gourmet.

Second course I had surf and turf. I only got this because there was the option to have beef or camel - and of course I went for the camel. It was an interesting steak because the piece thickens in the middle as it's cooked (probably something to do with the tendons) - so the outer, thinner edges are better cooked than the thick part in the middle. I ordered it medium rare (with gamy meat you don't want it overcooked), but the middle bit was quite rare in the middle. This didn't matter because the whole steak was very tender and very yummy. Melted in the mouth.

And now I am stuffed and ready for bed.
