Tern = Turd
Oct. 18th, 2005 06:59 pmStu picked up a Crested Tern from Leslie (local bird carer) today, being told that it was ready for release.
We take it to the bay and release it. It runs along, flaps a bit, lands on it's face. Repeat. Eventually tern is on mud and still not flying. Tern starts to bathe and gets very wet and muddy. Kites gather.
It was getting dark so I thought, "screw this", and waded out into the mud barefoot. Got to half-shin deep. But I got the tern, which proceeded to bite me on the hand, ungrateful so-and-so. When walking into the mud I was slow and careful. But with a cranky tern in hand I got out of there quick smart.
The tern is currently in Stu's bathroom, we'll see how it is in the morning. Can't put it in the old chicken coop because if it's just sitting on the ground ants and/or a snake will get it.
And Leslie really should start making sure birds are okay before giving them to us for release. The Great Knot we released a couple of weeks ago didn't look too crash hot either.
