So many books... so little time...
Feb. 27th, 2003 06:52 amThis should have been posted last nyte. It's now 7am.

I think I'm gonna revert back to how I was when I was younger (*shock* hey what's new!?) and only read non-fiction books again. The only exception will be Chase by Dean Koontz when I find it and any new Koontz to come out. And I will finish Magician.
I went to the library (reserved copies of Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, yay!) I hadn't gotten anything out there in so long that they still had on their records that I was going to Swan View Senior High School. hehe, fixed all that up and they now have my e-mail address too so I can get updates and stuff, I think I will go there more often again, it is only a 2 minute drive or so up the highway.
The section I used to make a bee-line too, the one with all the books on weird stuff like ghosts and the Loch Ness monster. It's not there anymore, not where it used to be at least. I found a few of the books scattered in other areas, but not all of them... I wonder where my beloved book on Nessie has got to. They still have Everycat and the Virgin Encyclopaedia of Rock (1993 edition!) - two books that I used to get out ALL the time, was tempted to get them again for old times sake. :) Lots of interesting other books there too, Stephen Hawking, Blind Watchmaker etc, I will get to them eventually, I want to read Lamarck's Signature first though.
Before I went to the library I went to get my jaw X-rayed, now we'll be able to see just how impacted/tilted my bloody wisdom's have become. The drive to Kalamunda is scenic but bloody dangerous. The speed limit on one section of Ridge Hill Rd is 70. I only felt safe doing 60 and below around all those sharp bends and blind corners and crests. This of course pissed off the other drivers, one which overtook me on the double white lines and proceeded to roar off at about 80... *sigh*. And the hills!! Dammit I have to put the car into second in some areas just to get it to make it up there. It doesn't help when there's a truck plodding along up ahead so you lose all your power after you slow down for it. Ack. Those hills are bloody steep, maybe next time I will go down the Zig-Zag just for a hoot...
I started playing Bejeweled. It's one of those siblings of Tetris and Columns. Aesthetically pleasing, mesmerising 80's style synthesised music, and completely hyptnotic game play - all in an awfully simple game. You'd figure as you leveled up the game would get harder, but one of the games I played seemed to just get easier. Ended up on level 8 with a score of 24600, about 3 times what I'd previously scored, and it was only my 4th game or so.
I have a feeling LJ is down again, so I am copying this before I try to post it. Bad LJ shall eat my posts no more!! Especially ones that are vaguely informative like this one!!!
And my shoulder is hurting again. :(

Yep, LJ IS down. Same problem still apparently. There always has to be some MORON who wants to ruin it for everyone else. It mystifies me why someone would cultivate people who hate thier guts. Makes no sense whatsoever.
So anyway, here's you're biological tidbit for the day.
One of the books I got out from the library is called "Biological Exuberance", it's about homosexual behaviour in species other than humans (mainly birds and mammals documented in this book). The book is over 700 pages long. ALOT of animals exhibit homosexual behaviour, be it simple pair bonding with an individual of the same sex all the way to mutual masturbation, oral and anal sex. Humans are NOT the only species that shows homosexuality. I honestly was of the belief that it was pretty rare among other species. But I guess, when I think about it, it's a species survival mechanism. Not everyone can mate and produce offspring because that would possibly result in overpopulation, maybe the homosexual individuals are "less fit" therefore do not reproduce. Maybe it's just a dominance thing. I think I need to read more of the book first.

Sheesh, assignment given in the second week, to be completed by week 3. My group's consists of finding out all these things.
CRIKEY!! I have a book which supposedly has every mammal in Australia in it. But there are no simple lists to give me the answer to ANY of the above questions. I think it's gonna be a matter of just flicking through the book and tallying stuff up. Shit, that's ALOT of work for a week 2 assignment with only 1 week to do it in. Not to mention various sources on the net give different overall numbers for mammals, native, introduced and endemic species. Bloody hell...

- How many mammals are in Australia?
How many are native?
How many are introduced?
How many are endemic to Australia?
How many are endemic to W.A.?
How many are endemic to South-West W.A.?
(details on native and introduced for all areas)
How many eutherians for each area, how many of these are marine mammals?
What are the statuses of these animals in all these areas?
