w00t - finally installed semagic
Feb. 17th, 2003 10:12 pmNow I don't hafta open up the LJ FAQ whenever I wanna do something fancy.
Burnt my finger cooking chips. Teatowels are not good substitutes for pot mits. But they were all that was around. Pity I got the the thin/nonexistent bit. Lucky it's my left hand but you don't realise how much you use the middle finger on your left hand. It doesn't hurt too badly now, had it on ice all thru bowling but boy it stung like nobody's buisness for an hour or two after I did it.
Been considering our spider. She has a friend now, a smaller orb that weaves her web beneath the spotlight. I'm assuming both these spiders are shes seeing they are huge and male spiders are generally small and insignificant. Okay, main spider. She is huge, obviously a healthy specimen. Possibly due to the fact that she has a bit of prime real estate to build her web on, pretty much an insect highway. The spoils must outweigh the disadvantage of the web being destroyed on a regular basis by cars. Respinning the web must take a lot of energy (I have never seen her respin it but I have never waited long enough to see, I assume she would, seeing it's still pretty early in the night most times when it's destroyed. Spiders eat their webs in the morning to gain back the protien used spinning them - did you know that? Anyway, that's my background in animal behaviour and stuff kicking in, considering things like this.
Got the reader for Science, Truth & Power. I think I will take it back and not do the unit. It barely touches on actual science. It's all semantics and philosophy and questioning whether science is true or not. Gah, not what I expected, don't want to waste my time and money on that.
Shud shower and sleep, 8:30 start tomorrow - ugh.

Date: 2003-02-17 08:10 am (UTC)I have made a point of leaving them alone ever since my family adopted a big (2-3 inches across) spider we called Daniel who lived in our toilet.
The only spider we have at our place is a little black thing that lives in the bathroom window. I should probably do something about him, as I think he is poisonnous.

Date: 2003-02-17 10:20 pm (UTC)A Dire Spider, in relation to the human player character, is about half the height of a human and seven feet across including the legs. Its really cute! I called it Harry.
Anyway, the point of all this is that the animation for making the spider move is uncannily realistic, and its really cool watching this thing speed along behind you.
Spiders can move SO fast with their eight legs, and you don't realise just HOW fast they can move. So kudo to Bioware for their spiders.
The other reason I mentioned it was I was willing to bet if I invited any of my spider hating friends in to view the spider, they would have been completely FREAKED by its realisticness. Especially as you can zoom in on it and see its mandibles move and everything. Harry is cool. And hairy.
The other thing I wanted to say was Science: Truth&Power sounds like a really interesting unit and I think you should do it. Never underestimate the value of being taught how to question something. Science should be taken with a pinch of salt, just like EVERYTHING else. In fact, I'd like to do it, if it doesnt have any prerequisites (Im going to be very surprised if I spelled that word right ^_^) that I don't have. What's its unit number? I want to look it up.
Re:
Date: 2003-02-18 12:21 am (UTC)it looks good from the description in the handbook, doesn't get an awfully glowing review in the A-book. But take a glance at the unit reader... you may be able to handle it cuz you like reading that stuff. But for me *shudders*.

*read cool spider facts in "Life on Earth* today.
I dunno, that unit does sound kinda cool. Though you probably have touched on some of it already in Env. Biol...
