For a world where it seems horrible things can happen to anyone (and occasionally horrible people get away with being horrible). I have compiled my top 5 awful moments. They are in no particular order.

The rape of Tysha

Tyrion Lannister was actually married once. To a Crofter's Daughter he and Jamie rescued from a couple of would-be rapists. He was only 13 at the time and she was about the same age. It could have been happily ever after if not for Tywin Lannister, who seems to just love making his dwarf son's life a living hell. Tywin forced Jaime to go along with the lie that Tysha was actually a whore Jaime had hired just to give his little brother a first time. Tywin then had his entire household guard rape the poor girl - in front of Tyrion - and pay her a silver coin each. As if this wasn't ghastly enough, Tywin then gave Tyrion a gold dragon to pay her and forced him to have sex with her again, then sent Tysha off to the free cities where she wouldn't have much choice but to actually be a whore. In one fell swoop Tywin manages to ruin the lives and relationships of Tysha, Tyrion AND Jaime.

The torture of Theon

We first meet Theon Greyjoy as the cocky ward/hostage of Ned Stark. Sure, he's there as insurance for his father's good behaviour, but overall he doesn't seem to be having a terrible time of it, he's best friends with Robb Stark and lives a relatively comfortable life in Winterfell. Upon returning to the Iron Islands with good intentions to unite the causes of Greyjoy and Stark, he is shot down in flames by his father and sister and decides to take Winterfell as his own to prove himself to them. While at Winterfell he frees the mysterious prisoner "Reek" and ends up being heavily influenced by him, making bad decision after bad decision and painting himself as a demon to the northerners. "Reek" leaves to gather some troops from the Dreadfort and on his return we learn he is actually Roose Bolton's bastard son, Ramsay, who had been thought dead.

Ramsay then proceeds to torture Theon physically, mentally, and probably in some other ways, eventually cowing the once arrogant Theon to such an extent that he is terrified to even recall his former life as his own and becomes the new "Reek", a shell of a man who lives to serve Ramsay in the hope that he won't lose any more body parts.

The rape of Lollys Stokeworth

Everyone remembers when The Hound rescued Sansa during the Bread Riots and launched a thousand SanSan ships. But Sansa was lucky. Lollys Stokeworth is the 33 year old daughter of one of the ladies of the court and seems to have a mental disability. She is found after the riots, wandering aimlessly, naked, and is said to have been raped by 50 men during the riots. If that isn't awful enough, she becomes pregnant and is made to go through with the pregnancy and birth. Ironically, the BEST thing to happen to the poor girl is to be married off to Bronn, who sees the whole thing as an opportunity to grab himself a castle and move even further up in the world.

The Red Wedding

In Westeros the laws of hospitality are sacred. If you are staying under someone else's roof and shared their bread and salt you can fully expect to treated as a guest and not harmed in any way. The Red Wedding is the prime example of all these sacred laws being thrown out the window so some major Lords could make a point and win a war.

After Robb Stark returns from The Crag with a new wife - the daughter of a Lannister bannerman, NOT the daughter of Walder Frey who he was promised to - Walder Frey defects to Tywin Lannister's side, Roose Bolton also decides to desert the sinking ship that is Robb Stark's rule and put the nails in his coffin while he's at it. They conspire and Lord Frey accepts Edmure Tully as a replacement for the King In The North as a husband for one of his daughter's. Robb and Catelyn both attend the wedding at The Twins, to not do so would be political suicide for Robb. A very unsettled Grey Wind is kept outside while Robb's party is offered plenty of alcohol to get them all drunk. After Edmure and Roslin Frey are married and bedded, the band plays The Rains of Castamere. It is the signal for slaughter to begin, as the band members reveal themselves to be sellswords, and Frey and Bolton bannerman turn on the Stark loyalists.

Roose Bolton personally stabs Robb Stark in the chest. Catelyn Stark has her throat cut. Grey Wind is peppered with crossbow bolts. As a final insult, Robb's head is chopped off and replaced with Grey Wind's. Catelyn is thrown naked into the river. It is a decisive victory for the Lannister side in the War of the Five Kings, but nobody in Westeros will be able to trust in Guest Right ever again.

Jeyne Poole's life

When we first meet Jeyne Poole, she is Sansa's best friend and daughter of Winterfell's head steward. She travels to King's Landing with Sansa, Ned and her father. Things are rosy until Ned Stark is accused of treason and she and Sansa are locked in a tower for three days with no information on what is going on. Instead of explaining to poor Jeyne what has become of her father (he is dead, along with all of Ned Stark's retainers at Court), Petyr Baelish pipes up that he'll "Take care of the girl." who is seen to be causing distress to Sansa because of her constant crying.

When I first read the books I immediately felt dread for poor Jeyne. Obviously Baelish was going to stick her in a brothel, and as we see much later, she's been "trained" while there. Jeyne is eventually sent North to pose as the missing Arya Stark and marry Ramsay Bolton, securing the Bolton claim to Winterfell and subsequently the North. As we know from Theon's experiences, Ramsay is anything but a loving and caring husband to his new wife.

That whole Lollys thing upsets me horribly, to the point where I can't even discuss it. It's just the cavalier attitude, and even the mocking attitude, that the majority of the characters have toward what happened. Nothing else in that series bothers me though, which is kind of weird.
