The Dark Knight Rises

I am so full of squee. I kinda deliberately expected to be disappointed, in the hope that I would be pleasantly surprised. I spent most of the movie grinning ear to ear and waving my hands like a silly fangirl.
Okay first things.
OHMYGOD they managed to stick Tim in there!! Sure, he has a slightly different name, is a cop, is a bit older but for all intents and purposes it was Tim. This had me in a squee from the moment he reveals to Bruce that he knows he is Batman and I realised what was going on with the character. I was so shat off by the whole 'Christian Bale refuses to be in a Batman movie with a Robin'. HOW can you have a Knighfall based storyline without Tim! And OMG what an asshole for shunning Robins in general. But Bale didn't shit me off in the movie at all. The bit at the end where the woman reveals his actual first name is Robin though - I thought that was unneccessary. Really, if you hadn't figured it out by then you don't deserve to know.
I was so caught up in the Timmy-squee that I was completely blindsided by Talia's reveal. I knew there was something not quite right with Tate, but it never crossed my mind that she could be Talia until the reveal. It was nice to be surprised.
I like how all the articles went on about how it would star Marion Cottilard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a buisiness woman and a cop, without revealing at all just how big a players they are.
- Motorbike chase scene. With that red helmet on Bane looks an awful lot like Jason Todd/Red Hood.
- Selina was very well executed. Oh hai Holly Robinson!
- A bad guy called Daggett? In B:Tas a Roland Daggett is a bigwig buisnessman in Gotham. He also becomes Clayface.
- Okay, upon some research I remember, Dagget isn't Clayface, he just plays a large role in the creation of Clayface in B:Tas.
- Had a few issues with Bane -
1. Middle Eastern/British instead of South/Central American? boo.
2. Anaesthetic in the mask?? What the crap?? Fuck your 'realism' Nolan, Bane and venom go hand in hand. That said, it didn't matter in a major way in the film. Nolan's excuse for the mask fit nicely with the story he was telling.
3. Again, for realism the Cavidad Oscuro (the Pit) has been altered. The actual place where Bane spent the majority of his youth and adolescence is the kind of place that I don't think would be survivable (see my musing on it in an earlier post to my LJ), but it did just prove that Bane is a fucking badass.
4. Back breaking scene. Awww yeah. But I guess there may have been rioting if that was left out. Bane IS the guy who broke Batman's back. That's his defining trait.
5. No Bird, Trogg or Zombie. :(
6. Bane and the League of Shadows have nothing to do with each other. BUT - for the story the movie tells, it works nicely. - Okay, turns out I am wrong here, in later storylines he does interact with the League. But still. I wanted the self-made badass from Santa Prisca.
7. Bane is NOBODY'S lackey, and he does nothing for love or friendship thank you very much (this was my hugest issue with the portrayal of Bane).
8. All this aside, he was a fucking badass. All those bombs going off in Gotham - beautiful.
- Jim gets to be a badass normal. Go Jimbo!
- The scene with the kid getting mugged for an apple - lifted directly from No Man's Land.
- Oh hai Jonny, you're looking more dishevilled and Scarecrow like every day.
- Pretty much the entire movie from when Bane blows everything up was heavily based on NML - much to my delight. The tagging, the cops vs rebels, the National Guard restricting movement to and from the island.
- BTW - how did Bruce get back on the island?
- Duh, of course Selina was going to come through and rescue Bruce.
- Sometimes you just can't get rid of a bomb eh Bruce? Pity there was no convenient rift in the universe you could dump it in like Tony Stark did a few months back.
- Fighting Bane in the sewers - direct lift from Knightfall.
- Mention of big alligators in the sewers had a large portion of the audience giggling.
- The whole nukes and EMPs thing seemed to have shades of The Dark Knight Returns.
- That statue of Batman - I've seen that somewhere. With a statue of Superman and Wonder Woman. Foreshadowing of a JLA movie?????
- Adopt ALL the orphans!!
- OMG How do I fit Dick Grayson into this universe?
