$10 mil in just under 3 hours. Fucking amazing.

I read that the RAMSAR convention is now starting to strategise on restoration of all the destroyed wetlands in the area, because it's part of the flight route for the migratory waders. I'll probably hear a lot more about that up in Broome and probably get to see the effects when the waders return around September this year (they leave Broome around February/March and return again during Spring).

Edit : As Jakie said - the grand total at the very end was $15 mil+

Eh, Australian commercial television just shits me. Did they really need to broadcast it on every commercial station and (apparantly) every major FM radio station? : /

I'm all for donating. But something about the way this was done just annoys me. I don't quite know why...

I think it was great that they could all put aside their differences and get together for this. I believe the only radio station broadcasting it was 94.5.

But I guess if your life revolves around T.V. you may be annoyed...

I know for a fact that 93.7 was and I overheard someone at work mentioning that all the FM stations were (which I interpreted as all the major stations).

FYI, I barely ever watch TV...

the artile http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=28008 says "At the end of the broadcast, the Reach Out to Asia event raised $15,198,329.20 through telephone, website and SMS donations. However, donations are continuing."

I guess I am just being anal now though

I am glad that people could give that collectively to a good bunch who will spend the money the way they say they will.

Hey, what's the immigration intake like in Australia?

I have no idea. We seem to be pretty good with legal immigrants.

We have LOADS of problems with illegal immigrants coming over from SE Asia and the Middle East.

pretty good? we winge about spending $3 mil deporting a desperate family (the bactiari's), we claim "they" are not like us in that they are prepared to throw thier children off a ship to their deaths.

and problems with illegal immigrants? it is the poms I have an issue with... whho can live here for a few years and then claim citizenship.

yeah we have problems with illegals. they waste the taxpayers money because we allow them a right of appeal, repeatedly. some other countries will get them to prove their refugee status and if they can't, they deport them straight away. much less hassle, and no backlog of illegals that sit in detention centers for long enough to claim residency if they were poms.

as for our immigration policy, it is pretty good, even if the poms and kiwis make up a large amount of them. there are obviously lots of them that realise just how good australia really is

yeah but is their situation so bad they have to leave it? for a refugee it certainly is, particularly if they use the means they do to get here, and only have a 50/50 chance of making it.

I think immigration should be set up more for those who need to get into the country and are willing to do something when they get here, unlike the Pom retiries and the Kiwis wanting better welfare

i'm with Jakie on this one... and we actually take in very small numbers of refugees compared to most european countries, like france, germany and the UK.
