Taken from - http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/animals1/catfish/candiru.html

When candirus parasitize humans, it is usually only when they are skinny-dipping while urinating in the water. The candiru tastes the urine stream and follows it back to the human. It then swims up the anus and lodges itself somewhere in the urinary tract with its spines.

Learn a bit of basic anatomy PLEASE! I don't recommend using this site for valid info on this particular fish.

Especially considering the candiru actually swims into the urethra and parks itself there. Some men, at least if what I've read elsewhere is correct, have to undergo an emergency penectomy.

does it also use its spines to dig a hole through the rectum to get to the urinary tract?

Heh - he lists one of his sources as an Urban Legends site.

And also manages to miss-spell the URL.

(deleted my first comment as it made no sense whatsoever!)

I saw this parasite!! On the discovery health channel I think? There was a special on all the parasites, like tape worms, etc.

That just seems really weird. I mean, like you wouldn't notice something swimming into your parts.

note to self-anus is now part of urinary tract *snickers*

What, YOU don't have a urinary anus? Uh oh.

Yeah. It would seem some information about this fish is for real and urologists have actually found it and it's traditional remedies to be useful for research (a tea they make that dissolves the fish pretty much may also be useful for dissolving kidney stones).

But most of the info seems to be urban legend.

What worries me, is that they're confused about *human* anatomy. They've got bits of their own, they should be familiar enough with it.
