Herdsman and stuff

gemfyreI met a guy from Brisbane this morning who is holidaying over here. He posts to the BirdsAus e-mail list and is a birder around my age *dies of shock*.
Anyway, we first went down to Pelican Point to try and find the wader roost, but even though the signs imply you can walk through the conservation area, all the gates are shut and locked so we couldn't see much at all. A flock of red-necked avocets, soem fairy terns, one common sandpiper. Saw a juvenille fan-tailed cuckoo in the carpark.
We then went to Herdsman because I knew that would be good and also it's "my turf" for birding. He'd never seen a blue-billed ducks before - Herdsman always has plenty and he'd also never seen great-crested grebes up close, again the lake was obliging. Got two new birds for the Herdsman list - little egret (saw about 3) and white-winged triller, which brings the lake list to 74 species now.
There were actually rufous night herons in the melaleucas on the other side of the lake from the Gould League centre. I'd never seen them anywhere but the clump near the centre before. And the dredger has been used!! It's most definetly moved a bit and there are NO cormorants on it now. I'm a little disgusted, there was a huge great cormorant nesting colony there that I was going to show my guest. I wonder where those poor birds have gone now.
And again, we mistook female blue-bills for freckled ducks.
I wore sunscreen and it was cloudy out there but my shoulders are pink anyway.

I've been thinking about changing it but beading and birding sounds cool and I do both (of course I bird a lot more than I bead) and I love looking at food porn and cooking and eating out.

Because honestly, it is. You want to be a miserable fuck, you'll be a miserable fuck. You want to be happy, you'll concentrate on the things that make life good and be happy.

I've explained elsewhere the origins of the Gemfyre name. Now it's just my online persona everywhere but on MLP boards, where I am known as Cosmos.
My default userpic currently: And awesome close up of a deer at Caversham Wildlife Park. We'd just fed them and they were investigating my camera so I stuck it on macro function and started snapping pics. I have a whole sequence of ultra-close up deer photos but the one in my icon was the best of the lot, perfectly centred and all. It's one of the best photos I've ever taken.
