DVD woes

Back of TV looks like this.

DVD plugs look like this.

Matt tells me this is a problem. I'm starting to think it's not the TVs that we get are incompatible with the DVD player, he just has a weird DVD player that's incompatible with the TVs we get.

BTW - this is the whole setup. Just need to get some DVD storage now. The collection is growing fast.

P.S. Phlegm sucks.

Bummer.

Nope, that's a normal DVD; your TV is probably just older than coaxial video plugs. (I think it's coaxial. I always get coaxial and RCA mixed up)

Actually, I just googled for images and I did get them mixed up. Oops. RCA is what the DVD has, coaxial is what the TV has.

You can probably get an adaptor from Dick Smith for a couple of bucks. OR, does the DVD player have an coaxial (aerial) plug? Cos then you can connect the video that way, and use the two audio plugs for audio. I think.

Still, go to Dick Smith with the cable and tell them you want a plug to convert it to coaxial, and problem solvered. Tandy might even have it, too.

Actually, now I think about it (darn, Luke's not here to ask) I think coaxial is the cable type, and not the plug. So tell them it's an "aerial plug" and they'll know what you mean.

Yes, what [livejournal.com profile] lotus79 said.

Said almost exactly what I was going to say, only better. And managed to chuck in a "problem solvered", too.

(*sniffle* No on around here gets it when I say "problem solvered" or "not happy Jan".)

[identity profile] gemfyre.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, looks like a converter is needed.

I wish Dick Smith was open on Sundays (and I felt alive enough to go out). I was hoping we could set all the stuff up this morning and watch DVDs tonight, but it will not be so. *sigh*

I thought the city and Freo were open on Sundays ... so the the one in Perth city might be open.

[identity profile] gemfyre.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but I feel like crap so going into town is kinda out of the question. :)

I just hope I feel a tad better for work tomorrow. Sheesh, in Broome I NEVER got sick.

[identity profile] devinjay.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
*hug* I hope you feel better, too. Maybe you're allergic to Perth?

[identity profile] gemfyre.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I reckon I am. As soon as I got off the plane I started sneezing. People, pollution, smoke, etc. Ack.

*sniffle* No on around here gets it when I say "problem solvered" or "not happy Jan".

Hee. Yeah, I've tried to explain the "not happy Jan" phenomenon to Americans before. It's amusing.

[identity profile] jakie-em.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
"no happy jan" is the only good thing Telstra has given us in decades... but then I think Telstra have "sold" the yellow pages to sensis now... I don't know it has been so long since I looked at an actual yellow pages *goes to yellowpages.com.au* yep they're sensis

mm, you have an ancient telly, like me.

If you have a VCR around it's probably newer than the telly and will take all three plugs and then the VCR usually has the old kind of cable that goes from VCR Video Out to your TV's Video In, and that'd work. You could even plug the audio directly into the telly maybe. It's just the video cable that needs a convertor.

Or you can get an adaptor, like they're saying.

Or you could get a new tv. But mine is ancient too :) I only have the one plug for my TV even I think, none of these fancy extra holes for audio. Heh.

[identity profile] gemfyre.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
- TV is about 10 years old. Previous TV was 20+ years old and the picture was going.
- Apparently at it's previous house a DVD player ran through it no problem.
- VCR is circa 1985 and has had a tape stuck in it for 2.5 years - we really should just throw it out, it's only good for a paperweight.
- Adaptor sounds like the way to go, but it seems they're kinda hard to find.
- We intend to get a DVD/VCR and a nice flat screen sometime, but funds don't allow for it at the moment. This TV was free and a massive improvement on what we had.

[identity profile] scribblette.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
you've got better than I have :)

If the yellow cord for sure doesn't plug into the video in of the back of the tv, for a couple of bucks you can get the convertor so that it does just fine. :) I'm pretty sure I did something like that to get my PS2 or Gamecube working a long while back.

[identity profile] stefanina.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
The yellow prong needs to go into the video in spot. It does look like you'll need to go get the converter. I think my mom has one laying around, but mailing it to you from the US would take longer than it would be worth...LOL

[identity profile] lotus79.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
have you got one of those cables for connecting VCRs to TV? (plug at both ends same as aerial plug) because if you do, and the DVD has an aerial plug (I think they still should, but I can't swear to it) it may work to connect them that way.

[identity profile] firvulag.livejournal.com 2006-04-09 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
we have 2 of them, however they're joined together because they're both too short to reach from the wall plug to the telly aerial port.

I don't believe the dvd player has the old type of plug on the back of it either, which is why it wasn't on the old telly (and was on the small one in the bedroom)

tomorrow i'll be heading to dick smiths or similar and hunting an adapter
