Ice

It was a rather spur of the moment decision, but I went ice skating last night.

Cockburn ice rink now slugs you $17 for a session - whether or not you're skating. I wasn't sure if I should skate, due to my wobbly knee. I was thinking of maybe stealing someone else's skates and doing a few metres to see how I felt and then deciding if I should hire skates or not. But when I saw the pricing structure I figured, oh well, I guess I'm gonna try to skate again, it's been 10 years.

I remember the theory, but lack the balance. My knee also twinged at times and made me nervous, I was deathly afraid of falling over and doing something to it.

I did many laps of the straight, skating down one side, getting off the rink and walking back to the first gate and skating down it again. I did do one full lap with Caris . Yay. On those parts where there weren't people at the wall I was doing rather well, I guess because I knew I could grab the wall at any time I didn't need it. But as soon as I reached a clump of people I'd have to stop and gingerly edge my way around them for fear of losing my balance and having nothing to hold on to if I did.

The one and only time I've been skating was in Sydney in the early 80s. I fell over on the ice and landed on my knees - not good, so I got off the rink and had more fun walking on the rubber matting on the blades.

I went with a workmate who had a friend who was a speed skating champion. He was practicing whizzing around the ice, came to a dead stop when he saw us and went down in a flurry of arms and legs.

I've only fallen once, and that time I was pulled over by someone else that fell.

We used to go regularly about 10 years ago and I was getting pretty good. 10 years and a bad knee injury make you lose it a bit though.

I need my entire house done in that matting, lovely non-slip floors. I kinda have a mortal fear of slippery surfaces these days.

I need to toddler-proof my place and take out all the sharp edges because I keep walking into things! I also don't look where I'm walking and tread on things - a couple of days ago I stood on the plug end (the end with the metal pointy bits) full force with a bare instep.

It was the kind of pain you knew was going to just keep getting worse.

Well done for getting out there and giving it a go. I'm keen to go back soon and I'd be happy to help you out with some laps if you'd like. :)

I didn't realise that they charged you whether you were a skater or a spectator!!

Does that mean poor Matt - there on crutches - had to pay to sit and watch? Lame!

Apparently a new rink has opened in Malaga. I want to check it out.

Matt looked at the sign with the pricing and loudly said "Screw that, I'll sit in the car!" The guy looked at his crutch and said, "I think you have an excuse." and let him in for free.
