we rent a 2 bedroom + sleepout 1 bathroom house in Joondanna. We pay $180 per week for it. Its on a HUGE block with a massive garden.
BUT the house is OLD. the kitchen and bathroom are pretty poky. But the master bedroom, living and dining areas are big. and we get a 4 car lockup workshop out the back for that price too.
I've never had a proper full time, properly paying job before. Now I do, I start when I can get to Narrogin where the work is and I'm looking for a place. I'll be on my own though so I must be able to afford it on my own, I'm wondering how much other people pay for rentals on thier own, I'm really not sure what price I can go to and not spend half my pay on rent.
From what I have seen the rent in country towns ranges from the fairly reasonable to the stupidly cheap. A combination of low land prices and low demand.
The problem is more likely finding a place that doesn't have at least three bedrooms, since country houses tend to be on the large side.
Well, you've seen our place (I think?) Anyway, it is old, should probably be condemned and has 3 bedrooms and a ridiculously huge backyard for $140 a week (for Perth, this is ridiculously cheap, which is why we haven't moved despite it being a dump). I pay half that and don't even notice (now that I am working).
I lived there on my own for 6 months when Luke moved out for a bit. Was paying $130 a week then, and just barely managing it with full youth allowance and rent assistance. Look about on the net; I'm sure there's a handy dandy thing somewhere to tell you what percentage of your paycheck should be your rent limit.
Also, I'll ask Luke when I get home what his Mum used to charge for rent when she owned a place there. He reckons it was the nicest house in the town, too. Pity she sold it; you might have been able to rent it, heh.
just reread that, and it might have been unclear... could barely manage it with no job and only centrelink payments. Nowadays I would probably be pretty ok.
Even though I'm English, just to give you a point of international comparison, I pay £560 per month, but that's all inclusive except council tax. All inclusive is rare in the UK. The more usual rate for my type of place is £550 with nothing included.
For that I get a 2 bed maisonette with garden that's shared with the hairdressers. Rooms all decent sized.
$155 per week in old dump of a house in carlisle, 2bedrooms + sleepout, HUGE backyard (800sqm block), powered shed, bus stop right outside, 15 minutes from the train station, less than 10 ks from CBD
I am currently living rent free in Geraldton as well as maintaining a house in Canberra. Obviously this means that my advice is not too useful to you but I felt like posting in case it helps (and I want to have a bit of a whinge).
My house in Canberra is a new 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in a developing suburb in the far north (it's about 1km in from the NSW border and 20km away from the CBD). The house is not very well appointed or of excellent construction but as I mentioned is both new and large. My lease specifies a $430 per week rent. To be fair though this is considered high for Canberra standards but not unreasonable (it is perhaps 5-10% above standard price)
According to quick research the same house in Geraldton would rent for between $175/wk and $250/wk ($175 for a reasonable suburb, $250 for the most expensive suburb in the region).
Rental prices like everything else are entirely supply and demand, the further you get from urban centers the lower demand is. You be able to find something large enough for yourself at an affordable price.
